Unleashing data insight with memory and storage innovation

The data-centric era has ushered in a new opportunity to tap data for business growth, but many companies continue to struggle to transform mounting data stores into competitive advantage. While much of this struggle relates to implementing a fundamental organizational data strategy, companies have also been limited by underlying infrastructure impediments to effective analysis of those large amounts of data. The computing architecture that ushered in the client server era and was honed for the agility and scale of the cloud has relied on a balance between compute, memory, storage and I/O that has served traditional enterprise applications well. However, with requirements for both data performance and capacity mounting daily and new types of data analytics applications emerging, this balanced architecture has been stressed as applications seek to use and analyze more data and as the speed of analysis can makes or breaks the value of insight and resultant action.

At Micron, we have long foreseen this fundamental architectural challenge. So, we have turned to our own technology innovation across traditional DDR memory and NAND storage products, as well as emerging technologies, to break through with new levels of capacity, performance and latency reductions. We see an opportunity to establish memory and storage platform capabilities that will unleash software developers to deliver solutions that speed insight and ultimately support emerging customer requirements. Moreover, the fundamental changes to memory storage hierarchy will deliver innovation in flexible and configurable infrastructure, bringing new agility to data-centric environments. One element of our strategy is the delivery of a new form of storage-storage class memory called 3D XPoint memory. This technology offers the same persistence as traditional NAND storage while also introducing improved performance. We've used 3D XPoint technology to introduce the Micron X100, ushering in breakthroughs on storage media performance and capacity. But more importantly, delivering this technology serves as the storage foundation for virtualized infrastructure with unprecedented quality of service and multitenancy capability.

We've been delighted to see the real value of this innovation emerge as we've worked with leading partners to test application performance with the capacity and speed delivered by an X100-fueled platform. For example, Micron engineers have tested the X100 performance against the leading cloud database, MongoDB. The results have been outstanding, with best-in-class performance with at least a 30% performance improvement using an X100-fueled platform. We have seen similar performance characteristics with the Aerospike NoSQL platform with improvements in operations per second and a dramatic tenfold reduction in latency over traditional NAND storage configurations. Leading organizations from across enterprise and large cloud service providers have recognized the opportunity to implement this technology as part of their larger infrastructure strategies.

You can expect to see more examples of performance advancements as additional industry leaders take advantage of this new technology. If your organization would like to put the X100 and other Micron memory and storage products through their paces as part of your data analytics strategy, connect with our team about a proof of concept or evaluation, or visit us to learn more about our portfolio offerings for the cloud. We can't wait to deliver this next wave of data-centric innovation and see how enterprises use this technology to deliver business growth.
